Where the opportunity is
We identify where longer lives collide with the short-life assumptions built into today’s markets and business models — and turn those gaps into commercial opportunities.
Why Now
The old life course assumed one sequence. Longer lives create multiple stages, transitions and restarts.
The old script
Fixed stages. One main career.
Skills depreciate.
Little room to restart.
The new reality
Many careers. Many roles. Many identities.
Skills appreciate.
Experience compounds.
Where CoLL works
That misalignment creates friction and risk — and opportunities to adapt what exists or build what is missing.
Longer lives reshape the whole market, not just the needs of older consumers.
We turn the consequences of longer lives into commercial opportunities businesses can act on.
A growing population does not make a market. There must be a real need, willingness to pay and a proposition that can win.
Scale of the signal
These estimates indicate the scale of the structural change and its economic potential. They tell us where to investigate; they do not imply that every large number represents a market.

Product
We investigate the structural shifts created by longer lives and design the commercial or institutional response — from adapting an existing business to shaping a venture or operating model that does not yet exist.
Find where inherited assumptions are holding the business back. Design and test a response that fits how people live now.
Start with an unmet need or an institutional gap. Shape a business for the emerging reality, without importing yesterday’s assumptions.
Approach
From the assumptions under pressure to the evidence needed for a commercial decision.
Investigate
We investigate where longer lives are putting pressure on the assumptions behind a market or institution.
Shape the response
We determine what should change, rather than assuming the answer in advance.
Define the evidence
We establish what evidence is needed before committing to the response.
The response follows the question.
We do not assume the answer in advance.
Focused work.
Clear decisions.
Each engagement connects a specific question to a defined product and a useful output. Methods such as transition mapping support the work; they are not a substitute for a commercial decision.
Exploration
Longer lives are changing institutions, markets and life transitions in ways that are still poorly understood. We investigate areas where the old model appears to be breaking — before deciding whether there is a commercial opportunity worth building.

Current exploration
Universities were built around a life in which education happened early and working life followed. That sequence is breaking down.
Careers are becoming longer and less linear just as AI is changing what people need to learn, how they learn it and where educational value sits. At the same time, universities in Türkiye face the prospect of a shrinking traditional undergraduate population.
Adult learning is not absent. Quite the opposite: the landscape already includes continuing education, executive programmes, microcredentials, open universities, career-conversion programmes, second-act fellowships and later-life learning. But these models are fragmented, and most remain separate from one another and from the broader question of how education should function across a 50- or 60-year adult life.
CoLL is investigating whether this fragmentation points to a new institutional and commercial model for universities: one designed around repeated learning, reinvention and productive life across adulthood.
What we are asking
Coming next
Longer lives do not merely extend retirement. They change how income, work, saving, drawdown and risk interact across a much longer and less linear life. This is one of the next areas CoLL intends to investigate.
Insight
A public record of what we observe, how we interpret it and which commercial questions remain open. Each piece can be shared directly from its own page.

Why the most useful unit of analysis is not age but the gap between an inherited assumption and the emerging reality of longer lives.
Two commercial pathways for the longer-life economy: retrofit existing businesses and design longer-life-native ventures.
Population scale tells a business where to look. It does not establish a problem, a customer, a buyer, a payer or a repeatable commercial model.
A research proposition: move from an institution encountered once in youth to a repeated relationship spanning 40–50 years of adult learning and transition.
A longer life with a greater capacity for work can coexist with labour-market systems that stop recognising accumulated expertise too early.
Cengiz Aydın argues that Türkiye’s demographic shift should be treated not only as a cost, but as a development opportunity built around lifelong learning and the productive value of experience.
Cengiz Aydın examines how longer, less linear lives call for a new language of age—and create space for repeated learning, work, reinvention and identity across adulthood.
About
CoLL is an independent specialist lab based in Istanbul and London. We combine commercial design with an understanding of institutions and public policy so that an opportunity is commercially attractive, executable, permissible and capable of sustaining a market.
CoLL is led by Stella Penso and Cengiz Aydın — Columbia University SIPA graduates whose complementary paths connect the commercial systems that create growth with the institutional environments that make growth possible.
